Incidence, Prevalence and Changes in Survival

  • Particularly relevant in neurodisabilities with delayed diagnosis (eg: CP, ID)

  • Increases in perinatal survival increase birth prevalence not incidence

  • Increases in childhood survival increases overall prevalence

  • Decreases in perinatal survival (eg: screening and termination programs) decreases birth prevalence but not incidence (eg: Down’s Syndrome, NTDs)
